Hey, I’m Ian.
I’m an alcoholic addict. I was about 15 when I started drinking in high school with a bunch of friends, and it just progressively got worse throughout the years. When I was about 34 years old, I started dabbling in a lot harder drugs. I was drinking and using almost every day, not really having any direction off of work. It just seemed like … It was almost groundhog day for me. Every day seemed to be the same thing and it was progressively getting worse.
My Turning Point
What happened was I had two overdoses in a matter of a month. I just knew for my health and wellbeing and for my family, and my daughter, that things needed to change immediately. I came to Aurora in June of 2017. I spent 34 days here and probably one of the best 34 days of my life.
My Experience at Aurora
The supports here are amazing. If you ask for help, they will help you in any way, shape or form possible. It was just great to know that they cared. It’s not just the money grab or something like that. The facility is world class. Situated on the side of Lake Winnipeg, also, in a nice treed-off area. The meals are amazing. The staff is amazing.
It’s just it’s a really, really great spot to start your recovery. What I really took advantage of was the working out aspect of it. They have the indoor pool here, a personal trainer that trains almost every day with you. Healthy eating and healthy living.
My recovery has been good. I’ve had some triggers, like my dog passing away. When you get frustrated with life, in general, it can be the littlest things not to turn to my old habits but, they set you up to know that that’s going to happen sooner or later. With the continuing care, having friends that I got to AA groups with, I have a sponsor. They teach you to reach out, and the minute you don’t reach out is the minute you’re in deep water.
My relationships, in general, have changed tenfold, really. Before, I was almost a recluse when I was using. Didn’t really talk to a lot of people. Kind of hid in my house, and since Aurora, I have become so close with my family, it’s amazing. When I’m with my daughter, the time spent is great now. I’m not sitting there hungover, tired. I can actually give her 100% of my attention and I love it.
People tell me, my friends and family tell me, that I have … they can just tell how much I’ve changed. Went from eating pizza and fast food to now, cooking great meals, healthy meals. Not only for myself but for my daughter and my family. Clean eating is huge for me now and that’s something that I really respect. Aurora did teach me that. You need to eat clean to feel clean, I think is how I would put it.
This program, you get out of it what you put into it and if you are spending the money and just going through the paces and not taking it seriously, then you’re setting yourself up for failure. That’s all there is to it. Anyone that’s hurting and in the bad position like I was, there is help and you just have to make the call. If you seriously want to get clean, and live a healthy lifestyle, this is the place to do it. I believe that 110%. I think my family would have to agree with that.
