Addiction Recovery
Recovery For Life
What’s stopping you from getting expert help designed specifically for the problem you have? For many folks it’s a lack of trust, a need to be independent and resistance towards letting go of a coping tool that has always been there for you. We understand. As human beings our first instinct when something is wrong is to look around our environment and see what’s causing it. We begin making environmental changes as a solution. A new partner, living situation, job, etc. Eventually it dawns on us that the common denominator in our problems is us. What a potent moment of awareness. Initially painful, this awareness means we can no longer blame external circumstances, people and institutions for our addictive behaviours. The beauty of this moment is that if the problem is within you, you can do something about it. No longer do you need to try to control and manage people, places and things around you. You can become empowered. With the right education and support you can be in recovery for life
How Do You Know We Are Right For You?
When you make the call to Aurora one of the most important areas we’ll explore with you is what resources you have in your life. Do you have dreams that were left behind in childhood? Do you have relationships with people who care deeply about your wellbeing? Do you have a supportive employer? Are you resilient? In other words, what are we working with in terms of areas to nurture and empower and nourish.
It’s our job to find the little sparks of life, the spirit that has been buried, the sparks of light that can be nourished and fanned into life. Finding yourself depleted, bewildered by the state you’re in, it may feel incredibly difficult to muster up the motivation to make changes. That’s where we come in, providing a guiding light, tools, nourishment for body, mind and soul.
Prior to seeking treatment it’s common to believe that if you can control your dependence, detox from your substance or change your outer circumstances you’’ll be recovered. Unfortunately it’s not that simple.
The complexities of being human mean the dependence is woven into the fiber of your being. In other words, removing or controlling the substance, situation or behaviour is the tip of the iceberg.
Motivation is everything when it comes to renovating a life and so we look at what you have that inspires you to be well and that supports wellness and that is worth getting better for. Additionally we identify any obstacles that need to be removed. What areas do we need to heal and grow and develop?
We call this process identifying Recovery Capital. We respect your entire experience, taking into account every facet of your life and identifying what will support or obstruct your recovery.

How Can I Help Someone Get Treatment?
Being in relationship with someone in active addiction can be incredibly frustrating, painful, and frightening. Often, you experience the consequences more acutely than the person with the addiction. Our experience has taught us that implementing change within the family, workplace or community makes a significant impact.
Ultimately, each individual needs to make their own life choices. However, with a neurobiological illness, it is critical to have leadership. We offer our expertise and support to help facilitate your conversations with the person in addiction. Often, we see an immediate shift when the right information is provided at the right moment. This is the first step in a recovery management system that sees people through admission to their continuing care and onward.
Many people come to treatment after their family members or employers have set firm boundaries, given direct feedback, and disengaged from the troubles of trying to manage someone else’s addiction.
Generally, we can coach you to create an environment conducive to someone choosing treatment. If necessary, we can recommend several highly-trained interventionists.
Why We Offer Programs For Family Members
The effects of being in relationship to someone with addiction take a much bigger toll than most people recognize. Being in a heightened state of vigilance increases cortisol levels and dysregulates your nervous system. Over time many people become accustomed to living with an unhealthy level of stress. Feelings of powerlessness, anger and frustration are regular occurrences. Health problems develop, and your mental health can become impacted.
In crisis mode, people unwittingly develop behaviours that keep them stuck in a traumatic response, a response that has been described as codependency and that fuels the additive cycle.
It is often difficult to recognize the behaviours you’ve developed that are causing you harm. You become convinced that if the person with addiction would change, you’d be well.
It is imperative that you gain insight and understanding into how substance use disorder affects family, work and community systems. This way, you can ensure that recovery principles are introduced into the system. Many people are surprised to discover there are predictable patterns of behaviour that emerge for those in relationship to someone with an addiction.
Now it’s time to learn strategies, behaviours and tools that will enhance your life. Those maladaptive coping tools that you’ve been working with are keeping you stuck, and there is so much more available for you. With understanding, awareness and support you can transform your life.
We’ll teach you…
- The neurobiological effects of addiction on the family system.
- How to set healthy boundaries that support better outcomes for everyone.
- The difference between support and enabling.
- 12 Step philosophy and how it can transform your relationships.
- How to develop self-care practices that improve the quality of your life.
Evidence shows that outcomes are greatly improved when recovery is introduced into the entire system. Sustained recovery becomes more possible when the environment supports it. If your family has been impacted by addiction, recovery for the whole family is necessary.

Ultimately, each individual needs to make their own life choices. However, with a neurobiological illness, it is important to have leadership. Many people come to us after their family members or employers have set firm boundaries, given direct feedback and disengaged from the insanity of trying to manage someone else’s addiction. As a private-pay treatment centre, our application process is unique to each individual. During your telephone consultation, we’ll ask about your current state of physical health, drug/alcohol usage, process addictions, mental health and more. After we speak with you, we’ll consult with the experts on our multidisciplinary team and make our recommendations for you.
Yes, our 24/7 medical withdrawal unit is the only one of its kind in Manitoba. Our highly-trained medical professionals support each member through their withdrawal. This ensures the individual transitions smoothly and safely from medical supervision to inpatient treatment.
The lifestyle and behavioural changes required for sustained recovery need daily practices to support them. We provide you with everything you need in order to have recovery for life. Each individual’s level of motivation will determine their outcome. Much like hypertension, diabetes, coronary issues, or any other chronic condition, after the acute phase of treatment, a specific care plan is created. This recovery management plan includes regular follow up, accountability practices, exercise, nutrition and involvement in a mutual-aid support group.
The treatment program we prescribe is evidence-based and aligned with best practices. We remain engaged with you for the long haul, inviting and encouraging participation in ongoing recovery management. We offer continuing care for life as we walk beside you well past your stay at Aurora.
We understand that one aspect of addiction is avoidance, particularly avoidance of strong emotional experiences. For that reason, we have measures in place to support you if you feel an overwhelming urge to leave. Our hope is that the new tools we provide will build new neural pathways that override the ingrained patterns of avoidance, however you are welcome to leave at any time.
Aurora Recovery Centre offers individualized treatment dependent on your specific needs. The average length of stay is 45 days. Please contact us now so we may assess your situation and recommend a length of stay.
We have ongoing intakes for accessible service and to create a therapeutic environment for new admissions. Our waitlist generally allows people to attend treatment within 1 to 10 days after they decide to come to Aurora Recovery Centre.
Individuals with a substance use disorder frequently suffer from mental health problems that may or may not be related to their substance use disorder. Aurora treats the addiction and the mental health disorder simultaneously. Both of these areas need to be addressed in order for the individual to recover. In addition to clinical team members who specialize in comorbidity, we also have a psychiatrist on staff.
After completing some initial paperwork, you will spend a minimum of 24 hours in our medical detox unit. While in the unit you’ll receive a mental health, physical and clinical assessment. The information gathered will be used to create your unique treatment plan. Once you have completed your stay in the medical unit you will begin your length of stay program.
