Programs

At Aurora Recovery Centre we can help you grow in an ecosystem of understanding.

Our Program Options

Our full service addiction recovery centre focuses on physical, spiritual and psychological well-being, using evidence based modalities.

We pride ourselves on creating sustainable recovery by using a recovery management system and tailoring treatment to each individual. All therapeutic groups, individual counselling sessions, and psycho-educational components are presented from a strengths based perspective that builds on each individuals existing assets.

Residential Inpatient Addiction Treatment

We are a full service residential addiction recovery centre that focuses on biological, physical, spiritual and psychological well-being, using evidence based modalities. The facility, previously a lakeside resort, has been updated to perfectly suit the needs of a premier treatment centre. On 25 acres, set in the serenity of nature, we are located on the shores of Lake Winnipeg one hour north of Winnipeg, in Gimli Manitoba.

What Happens in Inpatient Addiction Treatment?

We work closely with you and your family throughout the entire continuum of care. From initial contact through to your continuing care plan, we walk alongside you, providing quality health care, dignity and expertise.

Assessment

Throughout your residential stay you will be assessed to ensure the level of care is meeting your level of need. Initially you’ll be psychologically, physically and clinically assessed to ensure that your treatment is tailored to you. Our interdisciplinary team of clinical counsellors, nurse practitioners, doctors, psychiatrists, support staff and our family program director collaborate to create your personalized recovery plan. We identify what stage your illness has progressed to and what resources you have in your life. We view your resources as Recovery Capital – internal and external assets that can be used to initiate and sustain recovery.

Detox

Our professional medical detox facility supports you throughout your detox process. 24 hour care ensures that you are as comfortable as possible and can transition smoothly into programming. Our team of doctors, nurses and clinicians work diligently to facilitate a supportive environment while you detox. Aurora is the only private treatment centre in Manitoba with a 24/7 medical detox unit. Medical detox for addiction provides stabilization for a chronic condition, but by itself does not change the long-term course of the illness. While detox alone is not considered addiction treatment, it is an essential piece of the treatment process for many people and medically supported detox is the safest and most comfortable way to go through withdrawal.

A comprehensive addiction recovery plan that addresses your unique needs is implemented. Detox: On-site Medical Detox Facility

At Aurora Recovery Centre, our professional medical detox facility supports you throughout your detox process. 24-hour care ensures that you are as comfortable as possible and can transition smoothly into programming. Our team of doctors, nurses and clinicians work diligently to facilitate a supportive environment while you detox. Aurora is the only private treatment centre in Manitoba with a 24/7 medical detox unit. As an essential first step on your journey into recovery, medically supported detox is the safest and most comfortable way to go through withdrawal.

Medically Assisted Withdrawal

Substance withdrawal can be accompanied by challenging physical and emotional symptoms, and may be potentially life-threatening. Medications, along with 24/7 monitoring, are used to safely assist you in your detoxification process. Our medical detox facility follows professional procedures and protocols to safely help you through your withdrawal experience. Our credentialed staff is trained in a variety of protocols for detoxification from all substances, including specialized training in complex, multi-substance withdrawal.

Some of the medications most commonly used during detox include:

  • Suboxone: Since 2002, Suboxone has been approved for the treatment of opioid use disorder. It is equally effective to methadone in treating withdrawal symptoms. Its active ingredient, buprenorphine, is a partial activator of the opioid receptor, and thus carries less addiction and overdose risk than methadone (though the risk is not zero).
  • Benzodiazepines: The mainstay of treatment in alcohol withdrawal, Benzodiazepines are safe, effective and the preferred treatment for alcohol detox. They are cross-tolerant with alcohol and modulate anxiolysis by stimulating GABA-A receptors. During withdrawal from one agent, the other may serve as a substitute. They are proven to reduce withdrawal severity and incidence of both seizures and delirium tremens. The dose is tapered to nil as the medical team determines it is no longer required.

How Long Does Medical Detox Last?

In most cases, medical detox lasts for three to seven days. The length and intensity of detox depends on many factors including:

  • Type of substance used: The type of substance used determines the withdrawal process. Alcohol withdrawal, for instance, can be experienced in just a few hours after the last drink and may require a taper of substitute medication that lasts several days.
  • Duration and frequency of use: The longer an individual has used a substance, the more likely there will be effects of physical dependence. Similarly, the more frequently an individual uses, the more likely physical reliance on a substance will develop. For drugs like benzodiazepines and opioids, physical dependence can develop in as little as six to eight weeks with regular, frequent use.
  • Quantity of substance used: Heavier substance use tends to promote faster tolerance as the body must take more drastic measures to acclimate itself to the presence of a large amount of a drug.
  • Individual factors: Body chemistry, metabolic rate, weight, and individual genetics influence the onset of withdrawal symptoms, and the response of that withdrawal to treatment.

What to Expect in Detox

  • Medical, clinical, and mental health assessments
  • 24 Hour medical monitoring by physician and nurses
  • Supportive staff ensuring all your needs are met
  • Personalized treatment plan initiated

Medical detox for addiction provides stabilization for a chronic condition, but by itself does not change the long-term course of the illness. Whether you have struggled with dependence on opioids, alcohol or other drugs, Aurora Recovery Centre can offer a multitude of professional resources to take you out of the darkness of addiction and into the light of recovery. All addiction shares the common element of compulsive behaviours that continue despite repeated negative consequences. This applies to substance use as well as process addictions, such as eating disorders, gambling, gaming, shopping addiction, relationship addiction and sex addiction. We walk alongside you as you make your way out of the darkness of addiction and into the light of recovery. Many of our staff are in sustained recovery and understand the challenges that you are facing. We bring empathy, expertise and encouragement to each person and family we work with. Continuing Care Recovery Management

Our commitment to your Recovery For Life means we stay connected with you after you complete your residential treatment. Aurora Recovery Centre is a compassionate, understanding recovery community that will support you from the time you walk through our doors and throughout your lifetime of recovery with our continuum of care. Providing an array of supports and personalized services ensures your needs are met.

Continuing Care Group

After completion of the acute care, residential portion of your program, you’ll transition into weekly alumni group meetings where you’ll find connection and accountability as you build your recovery foundation.

Alumni

A great way to enhance your recovery is to have or become an Alumni Peer Support person. When leaving treatment an Alumni Peer Support person becomes the bridge between immersion in treatment and actively living in recovery. They can be an ally and resource who has already walked in your shoes. Becoming an Alumni Peer Support person gives you the opportunity to be of service and use your experience to help someone else. Mentoring someone as they transition out of treatment is a wonderful way to strengthen your own recovery. Becoming engaged in a healthy community is one of the goals of substance use disorder treatment. As a member of Aurora’s Alumni, you’ll have the opportunity to become involved in various community outreach programs and service activities.

12 Step Community

Life after treatment means engaging in behavioural and lifestyle changes that will sustain your recovery for life. Much like any chronic condition (hypertension, diabetes, coronary issues, etc) when you have the acute phase of treatment you’re prescribed a specific treatment plan that is monitored throughout your stay, ensuring you’re responding favorably. When you leave acute care you’re provided with an ongoing recovery management plan with regular follow up, prescribed treatment plan, lifestyle changes, and regular involvement with some form of mutual aid support group. This is where a peer support group plays a pivotal role. The accountability and support provided by working a 12 Step program ensures that you will continue to grow and thrive.

Alternative Recovery Community

12 Step-based recovery isn’t for everyone and we recognize that there are many paths to recovery. A critical component of your continuing care is connection, accountability and support. The evidence supports positive long term outcomes when you remain engaged in ongoing support and we have a variety of alternatives to offer you.

Alumni Community on Social Media

We invite you to join our alumni only private Facebook page. You’ll be able to stay connected and current on upcoming events, and get enhanced communication and support from staff and other alumni.

Transitional Housing and Sober Living

Onsite Transitional housing offers an independent, sober lifestyle, away from the immediate support of treatment counsellors, but close enough to access support when you need it. You’ll integrate all you have learned in an environment designed to see you succeed. Onsite transitional housing sober living environments are proven to decrease the chance of relapse and support the building of your recovery foundation. Studies show that the environment and structure in transitional housing helps further your personal growth and long-term sobriety.

The Benefits of Transitional Housing

Outpatient Addiction Treatment

Our Intensive Outpatient Treatment Program is for adults who suffer from alcohol dependence, substance use, process addictions and mental health disorders. Participants are engaged in building, or restoring their recovery foundation, while simultaneously incorporating new behaviours into their day to day lives. You’ll gain insight into the neurobiological illness of addiction and how it has impacted all facets of your life. With support you’ll develop new healthy behaviours and improve the quality of your life and relationships. Your commitment to this process creates accountability and connection. All participants must be either fully detoxed or on a managed taper to abstinence protocol. Services are professionally delivered at our Winnipeg location.

An Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) is beneficial at various points on your recovery journey.

Introduction to Recovery

Intensive outpatient addiction treatment is a comprehensive program that gives you everything you need to build a solid recovery foundation. The chronic nature of dependence means that it’s progression eventually leads to crisis. Most people use their resources to manage and control their dependence until those resources don’t work anymore. That’s where we come in. An IOP can serve the needs of those who need a lower level of care than residential treatment provides.

After or Combined with Residential Treatment

After completing residential treatment you can continue your recovery program with a graduated process. This allows you to integrate the new tools and behaviours into your daily life with the added benefit of a comprehensive and structured program. As part of a recovery management system, an IOP can be connected with a shorter stay in residential treatment. Transitioning directly from residential treatment into an IOP can be very effective.

For Further Development of Your Recovery

As you grow and heal you’ll likely discover different facets of yourself that would benefit from an IOP experience. Some of the common themes that people encounter in their recovery are:

  • Relationship challenges around communication and boundaries.
  • Compulsive behaviours developing in other areas of your life.
  • Past trauma and/or grief surfacing.

Whether your recovery journey has just begun or you’re looking to take your recovery to the next level, our experienced addiction treatment professionals will provide the support you need to change your life.

Our Exceptional Intensive Outpatient Program Offers:

  • Ongoing intake for accessible service
  • Small groups with a maximum of 10 participants
  • Group therapy and 8 one on one therapy sessions
  • Education on the neurobiological aspects of addiction and recovery
  • Biopsychosocial informed; reflecting addiction through the complex interaction of biological factors (genetic, biochemical, etc.), psychological factors (mood, personality, behavior, etc.) and social factors (cultural, familial, socioeconomic, etc.)
  • Evidence-based treatment modalities
  • Psychoeducational sessions providing tools for sustained recovery
  • Understanding motivation and stages of change
  • Identifying barriers to recovery
  • Family dynamics and rebuilding personal relationships
  • Concurrent disorder informed individualized care
